Policy Statement

In the unfortunate event of a student's death during an academic term in which it may reasonably be assumed that he or she would have completed all degree requirements, a degree may be awarded posthumously to the student. The decision as to the likelihood that the student would have completed his or her work during the term shall be at the discretion of the president. The special nature of the award should be reflected on all pertinent records.

Purpose

To justify awarding a posthumous degree.

Procedures

Procedures for awarding a posthumous degree to a University of Memphis student are as follows:

1. When the University of Memphis learns of the death of a currently enrolled student at the U of M, the Student Affairs Office will forward a report to the Dean's office of the college in which the student has declared a major, if an undergraduate; or to the Graduate School, if a graduate. The report will include the student's progress toward graduation and other relevant information about the student (extracurricular activities, honors, etc.).

2.  The relevant Dean will review the report and forward it with comments to the Provost for undergraduate students, and to the Vice Provost for Graduate Programs for graduate students.

3.  The Vice Provost for Graduate Programs will review the graduate student report and forward it with comments to the Provost.

4.  The Provost will review the report and forward it with a recommendation to the President.

5.  The President will review the report, comments and recommendation, and make a determination of whether to award a posthumous degree.

6.  If a degree is awarded, the Commencement Office is responsible for notifying family members and learning their wishes for the ceremony.

7.  The posthumous nature of the award will be indicated on the diploma, on the student's permanent record, and in the commencement program.
